Compassion Collider

The Compassion Initiative envisages a future where students and staff within the University of Edinburgh have a shared understanding of how compassion, empathy and altruism provide a robust foundation for positive societal change. The Initiative believes that purposeful compassion is critical to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals: it can challenge the boundaries of knowledge and insight, and support a healthier, happier, more resilient and sustainable quality of life for all at the University. Therefore the Initiative commits to working together with partners to ensure that in parallel to its world class teaching and research, the University will nurture compassion and empathy to equip students to meet the challenges of our complex, volatile, and fast-changing global society.

This Collider aims to rapidly identify and co-design an intervention to encourage compassion in the student body that can be deployed in Induction Week in September of this year. To do this, it brings together academics and professionals from a range of disciplines, opening up discussions to see how we can work together to come up with creative solutions.

Speakers include: Dr James Hawkins, Subramanian Ramamoorthy, plus one other, TBC.

A collider accelerates together people from different backgrounds – and sees what sticks together, and what falls apart. It generates energy and (often) enlightenment. It is a conceptual design event, bringing together computational thinking and design thinking, to pull informaticians together with designers, and problem holders. The first part of the Collider sets the scene before breaking out into workshop sessions. Setting the scene is really about the getting a good view of the key problems – the technologies brought into the picture are typically a provocation – they are not necessarily the right solution to the problem, but they encourage participants to see how things fit together – or not!
