Human-AI Interaction: Cooking, Reviewing, and Looking for Work
In this talk, I’ll present three interrelated studies of human-AI interaction. First, I’ll tell you what happened when we asked students to bake a cake using only a voice user interface (VUI) to follow the recipe. The errors they encountered along the way highlight the capabilities and limitations of VUIs in supporting daily tasks. Next, I’ll explore a timely scenario in which individuals routinely copy and paste AI-generated text from Chat GPT without carefully reading it first. I’ll discuss the potential consequences of such behaviour and propose that integrated attention checks might serve as a safeguard against our inclination towards convenience. Lastly, I’ll give a detailed snapshot of daily life working in the gig economy, highlighting the tension between the flexibility offered by digital platforms and the restrictions they impose on workers. These three studies, which will be presented at CHI 2024, give insights into the benefits, challenges, and pitfalls of human-AI interaction. And thanks to Chat GPT for drafting this abstract—rest assured, it has been thoroughly reviewed before sending.
