Contemporary arts and design practitioners are mobile, diverse and interdisciplinary, made even more significant during the pandemic. The evolving needs of these practitioners require new sets of skills and innovative methods to enable stronger maker links. This research explores co-creation between different design/craft practitioners through a distributed participatory design and auditory process. It presents the ongoing reflections and insights towards hybrid ways of digital/analogue making that augment, but do not replace, the influence and expertise of the practitioner on the design and creation process. Thus, it promotes an attunement to landscape in multi-sensory formats and working within a contemporary century context, encouraging conversations between practitioners from multiple art/design disciplines. Through these different lines of work, we explore what it means to be a practitioner in the twenty-first century in Scotland and beyond, including challenging the arts/crafts and craft/design divide through collaborative interdisciplinary participation.
George Jaramillo is Assistant Professor of Design at Heriot-Watt University’s School of Textiles and Design. His research explores landscapes, heritage and transdisciplinary practices in developing codesigned futures. He is also a board member of the Scottish Sculpture Workshop exploring applications of EDI and landscape entanglements in contemporary art.
