DI Webinar – Joseph Lindley and David Philip Green, Lancaster University

Design Research: The Revolution will (sort of) be Televised

Industrialisation and digitisation have resulted in a dynamic, globalised, highly technological world; now we must figure out how to make sense of it. Because they’re inherently future-focused, naturally interdisciplinary, and can consider both social and technological phenomenon, Design-led Research approaches (things like Research through Design, Design Fiction, and Critical Design) are particularly good at making sense of the rapidly changing realities of the 21st century. Design Research Works is a 4-year mission to understand and promote these approaches. In this talk, Joseph Lindley will introduce Design Research Works before David Philip Green outlines how documentary-inspired approaches will be leveraged to support the project’s research and leadership objectives.

Joseph Lindley leads Design Research Works and is a Research Fellow at Lancaster University. His PhD was probably the first in the world where the method and the topic were both Design Fiction. He has utilised Design-led Research methods in several post-doctoral research positions and secured a UK Research and Innovation Future Leaders Fellowship in 2020.

David Philip Green is a Senior Research Associate with Design Research Works. He is a documentary maker and practice-based researcher, with expertise in interactive nonfiction. He has a PhD in interactive documentary from OpenLab Newcastle and is an alumnus of research groups including the Digital Cultures Research Centre at UWE Bristol and MIT OpenDocLab, where he was a fellow 2019-2020.
