Design Informatics at the 2024 Science Festival

Presenting a programme of exhibitions and events by designers, artists, students and researchers exploring AI, technology, data and ethics.

We are delighted to announce that for the 2024 Edinburgh Science Festival the Institute for Design Informatics will present a series of exhibitions and events at Inspace, Summerhall and at various venues across the City of Edinburgh

Designing Data Humans exhibition features the work of Design Informatics MSc/MA students presenting a series of playful prototypes which examine and question our relationships to data technologies.

The BOX interactive installation by Dr Fiona Smith, Creator in Residence at Fraunhofer MEVIS, explores the practical and ethical implications of integrating AI technology into healthcare accompanied by events that open up the creative process.

Creative Informatics presents a programme of exhibitions and events culminating their five year programme and showcasing products, experiences and groundbreaking creative work, accompanied by talks, displays and demos that exploring Creative AI, creative technologies and on-screen innovation.

Morality Calculus exhibition is a bioart installation by artist Yuning Chen in collaboration with biologist Dr.Elise Cachat that questions how we calculate the moral status of living organisms.

Morality Calculus

Visit this installation to enter a dialogue with work which aims to provoke discussion on the moral dimension of the part-based analogy prevalent in synthetic biology: if living organisms are seen as mechanical vessels containing functional genetic legos, how do we ‘calculate’ the moral status of a yeast-human cell hybrid?

Dates
31 Mar–26 May 2024
11am – 5pm

Summerhall
1 Summerhall, Newington,
Edinburgh EH9 1PL
