Aditi Surana, PhD Candidate

Aditi Surana is an Early-Stage Researcher and PhD candidate at Design Informatics and the School of Design at the Edinburgh College of Arts. She is also a Marie Curie Fellow within the EU’s Innovative Training ‘DCODE’ Network. Her PhD focusses on examining human-centred and design-led approaches to AI governance and policy frameworks to help maintain democratic values and citizens’ rights. She is supervised by Dr. Ewa Luger, Dr. Lachlan Urquhart, and Prof. Irina Shklovski.

Aditi has a background in Computer Science and Design. She received her MFA in Design & Technology from Parsons School of Design, The New School. Prior to starting her PhD, she worked as Lead Experience Designer at Verizon in New York where her focus was using ethnographic methods and Interaction Design principles to create a multi-modal, voice-enabled digital assistant for a country-wide audience.

She is interested in working at the intersections of human-computer interaction, law, policy, and design to build inclusive and equitable socio-technical systems.
