BRAID is a UK-wide programme dedicated to integrating Arts and Humanities research more fully into the Responsible AI ecosystem, as well as bridging the divides between academic, industry, policy and regulatory work on responsible AI.
BRAID is a six-year, £15.9 million investment in enabling responsible AI in the UK, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), led by professors Ewa Luger and Shannon Vallor.
Working in partnership with the Ada Lovelace Institute and BBC, our team brings together expertise in human-computer interaction, moral philosophy, arts, design, law, social sciences, journalism, and AI.
BRAID is extended by a network of interdisciplinary researchers and partnering organisations through the delivery of funding calls, community building events, and a series of programmed activities. Read more about our community launch event here.
Through funding the Arts and Humanities community we are broadening how we understand responsible AI. This means placing responsibility in context, ensuring approaches respond to the needs of diverse publics, and centring the human in how we think about, govern and design the AI systems that are already impacting our everyday lives.
Our scoping projects are designed to enable teams of researchers across the UK to undertake scoping and preparation work, build partnerships and map parts of the AI ecosystem. The goal is to define what responsible AI looks like across different sectors of society such as education, policing and the creative industries. These projects will result in early-stage research and recommendations to inform future work in the field
BRAID fellowships support individual researchers to work in partnership with public, private and third sector organisations to address current challenges in the field of responsible AI. By working on common challenges across sectors and with a range of stakeholders, the programme aims to support leadership in the field of responsible AI, create lasting connections, and directly impact how AI is considered, developed and deployed in research, in practice, and in society at large.
BRAID will be running regular community events, engagement opportunities and funding calls from 2022 to 2028. Join our mailing list and newsletter here to be part of the community and receive regular updates on BRAID activities.
