Yiwei Lu, PhD Candidate

Yiwei Lu is a PhD candidate supervised by Prof. Burkhard Schafer and Dr. Lachlan Urquhart. His PhD research focused on the application of automatic reasoning techniques in law to the development and design of AI products. He is a member of the SCRIPT Centre and RaD Lab at the University of Edinburgh. He participated in the Trustworthy Autonomous Systems (TAS) project as an assistant researcher.

His research field and research interests focus on the interaction between AI and law. On the one hand, it is about how law can and should adapt to face the new challenges brought about by AI, and on the other hand, it is about how designers and developers of AI technology can face the new legal environment and seek efficient and lawful innovation. Legal technology, which combines the advantages of the two, is a possible path that he pays particular attention to. He uses different tools to design and explore specific legal technologies, and is also keen on theoretical discussions on topics such as ‘Code is Law’.
